The IUCN

 Hi,

Yesterday we went to the Animal Adventure Park (https://theanimaladventurepark.com/Page/home) near Binghamton, NY, and saw lots and lots of animals. For each animal exhibit there was a sign describing the animal as well as the animal's conservation status according to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The IUCN lists more than 41,000 species worldwide at risk of extinction.

The IUCN categorizes species (both plant and animal) like this:

1) LC (Least Concern) - a species that is still plentiful in the wild

2) NT (Near Threatened) - a species may be vulnerable in the near future

3) VU (Vulnerable) - a species is threatened with extinction unless conditions for the species improve

4) EN (Endangered) - a species is likely to become extinct in the near future

5) CR (Critically Endangered) - a species faces an extremely high risk of extinction

6) EW (Extinct in the Wild) - a species is only surviving in captivity

7) EX (Extinct) - a species is gone

Here are a few pictures of some of the signs from the Animal Adventure Park. You can see how each animal is categorized according to the IUCN.

Until next time,

Grace
