W🐺lf Mountain Nature Center

On July 17, 2021, I went to The Wolf Mountain Nature Center (WMNC), and I saw wolves, coyotes, and arctic foxes. It was a great experience. My parents didn’t tell me where we were going that morning and I only found out when I saw the sign to the WMNC. What a surprise! It was an awesome day spent with my favorite animal, the wolf.

The scientific name for the wolf is Canis lupus.  The wolf is an efficient predator and is highly social. Wolves live in packs; wolves without a pack are called lone wolves. Though it is a common belief that wolves howl at the moon they don’t; wolves howl to communicate their location to pack members and to ward off rival packs from their territory.

The scientific name for the coyote is Canis latrans. Coyotes usually travel alone but can be seen as a pack.

The scientific name for the arctic fox is Vulpes lagopus. Arctic foxes are nomadic and travel great distances across their range, usually in a family group.  Arctic foxes are known as the “ghost spirits of the north” by the Inuit people.

The Wolf Mountain Nature Center was a great place to spend the afternoon. The wolves, coyotes, and arctic foxes are well taken care of and are allowed to live as wild a life as possible. The WMNC has a nice gift shop, well-maintained hiking trails, picnic areas, volunteer opportunities, and educational programs (I plan to Camp with the Wolves next summer).

Until next time,

  1. The exhibits look quite nice and natural, too. Glad to see that they're being well taken.
